Fitness Challenge on Pinterest

Ladies, I must confess, I used to be a bit of a gym slut. I would frequent Crossfit, yoga, treadmill and spin studios all over town. I felt totally spoiled. My cross-training ways were keeping me in great shape but it was costing me a fortune. And times is tight, my friends. I need to save my fortune! How can I stay in great shape without spending tons of money and without getting bored? The answer is simple. Pinterest. The home workout trend has never been hotter. I’ve been collecting workouts on Pinterest for months. I have over 200 pins on my fitness board. That’s 200 workouts! HIIT, Crossfit, yoga, abs, butt, legs….you name it, we’re covered. I’m dropping my gym membership for 90 days to clean out my Pinterest board. Are you up for the challenge? I was just floating along in life making vision boards out of magazine clippings and cork boards when Pinterest appeared on my laptop and exploded my mind. Since my introduction to this beautiful time warp, I have learned 51 ways to use a binder clip, 2000 ways to wear my hair in a ponytail, and one million ways to sculpt my ass to perfection. Pinterest is awesome. But you know what would be more awesome? If whatever you pinned just appeared in real life. That perfectly messy bun. Poof. Hair done. That tutorial on flawless skin. Poof. Camera ready. The best ever chewy chocolate chip cookie recipe. Poof. Warm cookies. Oh wait, the best, that perfectly fit body you pinned for inspiration. Poof. You have the best body ever. Pinterest would rule the world and I would be their loyal subject. Sadly, technology is lagging behind my wildest dreams. Until the simple act of pinning makes things magically appear in real life, we are left in control. We are responsible for the creation of our dream body. I challenge you to not just pin it, DO IT. Let’s put all those fitness pins to good use….you did not pin in vain! Over the next 90 days your mission, should you choose to accept, is to complete as many pinned workouts as you can. If you’re in, create a new board and name it “Mission Complete” . This is where you will pin workouts once you complete them. Follow my Mission Complete board here. Add the words “Challenge Accepted” to your current fitness...

WTH do you eat on a 30 day cleanse?

WTH do you eat on a 30 day cleanse?

The challenge: 30 day cleanse I’m one week into this hardcore nutrition challenge. Sugar, alcohol, gluten, dairy, caffeine, and meat have been removed from my diet. (In full disclosure, I already avoid alcohol, meat and gluten 90% of the time. Did I say 90%? Better make it 80%) I knew the hardest part of the challenge for me was going to be the dairy and sugar. I mean, you take away my cheese & chocolate, and is life really worth living? Why so strict & mean? LOL, it’s because of research. Damn, research! The more I learn about nutrition, obesity, disease, and the state of our food supply the more open I am to challenges like this. The underlying mission of this challenge is to eliminate processed foods and overdose on whole foods, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. The goal is to rapidly detoxify your cells and optimize nutrient uptake, cleanse the digestive system, refresh your taste buds, make your skin glowing, and purge fat. A bonus of the challenge is its anti-Candida benefits. I recently self-diagnosed (it’s totally fine, I do this all the time) myself with Candida overgrowth. Candida is a fungus that can be found in our gut. When Candida overgrowth occurs it can cause a handful of negative symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, (ear muffs gentlemen) yeast infections, irritability, cravings for sugar and carbohydrates, difficulty concentrating, and severe reactions to alcohol. Anything sound familiar? When I read those symptoms, I was making check marks like crazy. Fatigue? Um, yeah. Sugar cravings? You don’t get the nickname “candy girl” for nothing. Severe reactions to alcohol? DOUBLE CHECK. One cocktail = two days suffering. That’s not normal….or very fun ;-). Candida feeds off the sugars in foods you eat. Dairy, alcohol, sugar, fruit, and gluten laden foods are all made of different types of sugar. That’s why this cleanse has anti-Candida benefits. No sugar, No gluten, No alcohol, No dairy. Note: This challenge isn’t intended to cure Candida. If you think you might be suffering from Candida seek more information online. Read more here.  What do I eat? First, may I suggest an “any time-any food” method to meal planning. I’ll eat breakfast for dinner and sushi for breakfast. It opens up your options, makes life easier and the flexibility is empowering rather than limiting. I also suggest starting with 5-8 meals to cycle through during the...

30 Day Metabolism Reset

30 Day Metabolism Reset

Fall Challenge 30 Days to Reset Your Metabolism It’s a little hardcore (ok, it’s really hardcore) and a total surprise, but screw it, let’s do it anyway! After a summer of indulgences NOW is the perfect time to reset your metabolism and set the tone for the winter. As the weather gets cooler and fashionable fall clothing hides our bodies, we tend to creep towards hibernation weight. Let’s pump the breaks on winter weight gain by kicking up your metabolism. What’s got your metabolism down? Well, all kinds of things sabotage your metabolism. But the biggest drag are foods that are processed. Removing processed foods from your diet is the most important part of this challenge. What does that mean? If it comes in a box or a bag-it’s out. Of course, there are going to be exceptions. Read the labels. If it has ingredients that you can’t pronounce or that your grandmother can’t identify-it’s out. If it comes from a drive through window-it’s out! Honestly, if it comes from a chain restaurant, whether it’s sit down or fast food, chances are….it’s out. What if it gets to be too much? Don’t be a drama queen. You can choose your level of commitment 14, 21, or 30 days. You can also choose the intensity of the challenge. So, let’s get to it. Level 1 You’re choosing to avoid SUGAR, CAFFEINE, ALCOHOL & DAIRY.  When it comes to sugar you have to be vigilant. It’s everywhere. Forget about candies, flavored coffee house drinks, cakes, cookies, ice cream, fruit bars, protein bars, juices, soda, energy drinks, fruit smoothies, sorbets, frozen treats, boxed cereals, and many sauces. What about fruit? It’s true that fruit contains a type of sugar but for this challenge eliminating fruit isn’t mandatory. Keep your servings to 3 pieces a day. Hell, you can even have 4 servings a day if you’re battling a strong sweet tooth. Fruit is always going to be a better choice than candy or cakes. Choose BERRIES whenever possible. Minimize grapes, mangoes and bananas. Minimize dried fruit. It’s way to easy to accidentally eat like 4 mangoes in one sitting.  Avoid dried fruit that has been sweetened. No caffeine means you have to avoid coffee & energy drinks, even low calorie options. It’s the caffeine-not the calories-that you’re removing. Caffeine is not bad, in fact it can be quite helpful when used properly. But...

5 Skinny Girl Tricks

5 Skinny Girl Tricks

Don’t skinny girls just drive you crazy?! I used to think my skinny friends were the worst. It seemed effortless for them to stay slim. And I secretly hated them for it ;-).   “It’s not a diet. It’s a lifestyle.” That epic eye is exactly how I felt. I was always on a new diet to lose the same 10lbs I gained when I stopped the last diet. I thought I was trying SO HARD. My skinny friends didn’t gain and lose weight all the time, like I did. My skinny friends didn’t deprive themselves, like I did. My skinny friends seemed happier and even looked healthier than I did. “WTH, man? That ain’t cool!” Eventually, I had to jump off my hater train and figure out what the hell my skinny friends were doing that I wasn’t. I discovered these 5 “tricks”.  Check them out and get ready to effortlessly take control of your health, nutrition & weight loss. 5 Skinny Girl Tricks 1. Stop Dieting First of all, none of my skinny friends are on a “diet”. They don’t do South Beach or Paleo, and they don’t have prepacked diet foods delivered to their door.   What they do is live a healthy lifestyle (we can eye roll all we want but it’s the truth). The difference is in the details. Changing your lifestyle starts with changing the way you think about the food you eat. Tips: Jump off the diet bandwagon. Put getting skinny on the back burner. Focus your energy on taking care of your body from the inside out. Why this works: Diets tend to be restrictive, unhealthy, and impossible to maintain for extended periods of time. This on again, off again affair wrecks your metabolism. When you adopt a healthy lifestyle, you’re making decisions that will make sense for you and your body for years to come. 2. Be Picky, Be Prepared My skinny friends are total food snobs. They won’t eat anything that isn’t organic, free range, wild, and hormone free. Tips: Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re purchasing food. Look for these key words: ORGANIC, NO GMOs, FRESH, WILD, NO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS, HORMONE FREE. Stock your house, your purse, the office, and your car with high quality whole foods. Don’t expect good choices to be at work or on vacation. In fact, prepare for the worst. My girlfriend, Andrea,...

Downsize Your Dishes

Downsize Your Dishes

Downsize Your Dishes The average dinner plate is 11 inches. That’s way too big! You know what happens when your plates are too big? You eat too much. Tips: Do yourself a favor and downsize your dishes. Swap your largest dinner plates with appetizer plates or large salad bowls. Why this works: People tend to fill and then finish their plates. Smaller plates automatically make for smaller portions. Portion awareness is key for controlling weight.   Check the experiment below. Both plates have one ounce of Baked Doritos (one of my guilty pleasures). Notice how the smaller plate seems more abundant while the larger plate just looks empty and sad. You can trick your brain into feeling satisfied with smaller portions by using smaller plates.  Get on the mailing list for the latest nutrition nibbles, workouts, and fitness motivation delivered right to your inbox.
